How to Prepare Your Home for Roof Replacement Day — A Complete Checklist
Your roof replacement day is scheduled. Here’s everything you should do beforehand to make the process smoother, protect your belongings, and help the crew work efficiently.
The Day Before
Exterior:
– Move all vehicles out of the driveway and away from the home’s perimeter — ideally a full block away or in the garage
– Move patio furniture, grills, planters, and any decorative items away from the house walls (at least 10-15 feet)
– Move children’s toys, lawn equipment, and anything else from the side and back yard
– Locate and mark any irrigation heads, low-profile landscaping lighting, or similar items near the house
Interior:
– Remove or cover any fragile items hung on interior walls — the vibration and pounding of installation can knock them off
– Clear your attic of any items you don’t want exposed to dust or movement
– Move any vehicles in the garage away from the garage walls — sawdust and debris can drift through gaps
Family:
– Let your neighbors know — roofing is loud and starts early
– Arrange for pets to be away from the property or securely contained well inside — crews will be moving around the perimeter constantly
– If you have young children, plan for them to be elsewhere or to have activities ready inside away from the windows
The Morning Of
- Ensure the driveway is completely clear for materials staging
- Make sure someone is available or reachable for questions — leave a contact number if you won’t be home
- If you have a gate code, security code, or special access considerations, communicate them in advance or in the morning
- Point out to the crew supervisor any specific landscaping you’re concerned about, sprinkler heads, or areas requiring extra care
During Installation
- Stay inside or well away from the work perimeter — falling debris is a real hazard
- Keep pets inside or well away from the work area
- If you need to leave, let the supervisor know — they may have questions during the day
- Don’t worry about occasional vibrations affecting hanging items — this is normal
What to Expect for Noise
Roofing is loud. Nail guns, hammering, material being slid and dropped, workers communicating — it’s continuous from the start of the day until work stops. Plan accordingly:
– Work-from-home employees: consider working elsewhere for the day
– Light sleepers: don’t plan to sleep in
– Remote meeting participants: schedule important calls for before or after the crew arrives
After the Crew Leaves
- Walk the property perimeter and check for nails the magnetic roller may have missed — especially in grass, mulch, and landscaping areas
- Check your downspouts — they should be clear and reattached properly
- Look at the finished ridge line from the street — ridge cap should be uniform and straight
The Final Walkthrough
The crew supervisor should walk the finished roof with you (or your designated representative) at project completion. This is your opportunity to:
– Ask questions about anything you noticed
– Point out any concerns before the crew leaves
– Confirm cleanup is complete
