The Pros and Cons of Slate Roofing

When making your decision about the type of roofing you prefer, there will be pros and cons. Here is what you can expect when considering slate roofing for your home.

Pros of Slate Roofing

  • Beautiful: Homeowners love slate roofs because they are stunning and beautiful. They give your home a clean and sleek look while still being available in a variety of colors and widths.
  • Durable: Whether natural or synthetic, slate roofs are durable and can withstand high winds and high temperatures for up to 75 years.
  • Low-maintenance: Slate roofs are easy to maintain because they are so durable. Their strength means you won’t have to worry about replacing damaged shingles as often as asphalt shingles.

Cons of Slate Roofing

  • Cost: You might balk at the price of slate roofing, especially when comparing it to asphalt shingles. But many homeowners are willing to pay more for a roof that looks beautiful, is more durable, and lasts longer!
  • Weight: Natural slate is very heavy, meaning it takes a lot of skill to properly install it.

Slate Roof FAQs

How much does it cost to install a new slate roof in Portage?

The final cost of a new slate roof will depend on the size and shape of your home. A synthetic slate roof can cost anywhere between $10,000 to $15,000 for the average home. Our team of roofing specialists will be happy to go over the different slate roofing options that will match your vision and budget.

What is the difference between natural and synthetic slate?

Natural slate comes from natural stone whereas synthetic slate is a petroleum-based material. Both will provide you with a beautiful roof and each has its pros and cons. Natural slate is a lot heavier and more durable than synthetic slate, but more expensive to install and replace if needed.

When working on older homes there are always issues and it was that for us. When Alamo was working on the facia they noticed brick issues and former facia not installed flat. They worked hard and corrected all of it. Our salesman Frank … More is beyond outstanding. A true asset to the team. He staying in close contact as any issues arrived to be sure they were not only resolved but were corrected in a most professional way. The team that installed the steep roof did an outstanding job. We waited for a few good rains before posting this review. And we are so pleased to say not only is it the most amazing roof install neat & beautifully appealing, but it does the job!! No more roof leaks :). I must also take the time to point out of Frank our Salesman services and roof inspection. We had several companies out and he was the only one that took the time to truly look at all areas of the roof. He discovered a bullet in the roof in a spot that was not leaking. He and my husband worked together so outstanding to be sure the police had it to process correctly. Never would we have thought such a thing would be in our neighborhood. The police pointed out it could have been from very far away. When the job was done Frank came by once again to be sure we were very pleased. We reviewed some of the unforseen issues and he was sure to do proper adjustments for our family. Never have we worked with such an honest and compassionate sales person. They also did an amazing job on the gutters. To say this company is good, 5 stars is not enough. They truly are such a wonderful group of folks to work with. Thank you. If our son's brother in law can not get to our siding we will be sure to have them do that as well. We have all the confidence they will do a great job on that as well. The old slogan from ghostbusters... who ya gonna call? Well for roofing issues it is Alamo Roofing... they are the best.

I recently had a mysterious roof leak that previous companies attempted to repair, while others couldn't begin to figure out where the leak was coming from. I called Alamo, Frank came out the next morning and in 15 minutes found the … More leak, quoted me an affordable price - and made certain the leak was repaired that same day - as we were expecting another "gully washer" of storms. Frank is personable, professional and has an attention to detail that is rarely seen - anymore. Everyone I met that day brought their "A" game. They have my business - as well as pop and ice cream that I gave them. LOL Call Alamo, meet Frank - all will be well.

I had a leaking roof from a skylight that was previously replaced by another company 13 years ago. That co, Ruel Roofing, came out to look at it and they were very unprofessional and slapped some tar around skylight and roof still leaked. … More Contacted Alamo and Frank came out, inspected roof himself, gave me a quote on high quality skylight plywood and shingles and had the job done to perfection in a very timely manner. Highly recommend Alamo Construction!

They negotiated a good price for me and sent the crew to my home and pulled permits! They were done in about … More 1 day. Yep one day! Almost 2000 sq ft in one day. Go with the best, go with Alamo!
